Training wheels have been in use for decades, primarily as a training aid for small children, to help them with balance as they learn to ride. We have learned, through personal experience, that traditional training wheels are too small and weak to be an effective tool, even for small children.
We have also found that small children are not the only people who need training wheels. Older, larger children (and adults) who have never learned to ride find them useful. In many cases, people with special needs, both young and old, find Fatwheels training wheels nothing short of liberating! Many people with Down Syndrome, Autism, and cerebral palsy, to name a few, have found that Fatwheels have opened new doors for outdoor recreation, which has resulted not only in physical improvements, but mental and emotional advancements as well.

The first step in choosing the correct product is determine the size bike required for the height and weight of the rider. (If you already have the bike skip on ahead) Here is a guide chart for children's bike sizes that I pulled from ibike.org:

Adults typically would choose a bike with 26 inch 27 inch or 700c wheels.

If you are familiar with us you may know of the "Standard" and "Deluxe" Fatwheels we used to have. Unfortunately, we have sold out of these wheels and the source was assimilated by a manufacturer of plush toys.

Now our "Ultra" and "Deluxe" Fatwheels are the same product with our own Made-in-USA fiberglass reinforced nylon wheels..

In a nutshell, the Fatwheels are for smaller riders (under 150 pounds) on bikes with wheel (tire) sizes from 16 inch to 26 inch. THE BIKE MUST HAVE A SOLID REAR AXLE, since the product mounts to the axle. The axle also needs to be long enough. If it barely pokes through the axle nut, you will need: AXLE EXTENDERS

If the bike has "quick release" axles (hollow axles with a "skewer" through it which holds the wheel on by turning a lever), you have the choice of replacing it with a solid axle, or choose the OUTRIGGERS. Also, if the rider weight is over 150 pounds, and/or if the bike has 27 inch or 700c wheels, and/or if the bike has 3 speed hardware on the end of the axle:- OUTRIGGERS ARE THE CHOICE. Most folks will find that the Outriggers with 12 inch wheels are perfect for their needs, and the extra size and expense of the 16 inch wheels is not necessary. The main advantage to the 16 inch is the high pressure tires, which can carry more weight than the 12 inch. (Also, note that Outriggers with 16" wheels are too big for 24 inch bikes).
